COCKTAILS AT COMME CA

Written by Holli Thomas  Photographs by Coleen Rider

It's 3:30. You've just hit the design stores on La Cienega and you're feeling a bit depleted.  Just around the corner on Melrose is Comme Ca, the perfect spot to chill out and sip a delicious, quality libation.  Pull up a seat at the bar with its beautiful, natural light, order, and depending on the crafting of the cocktail, prepare to watch the ice fly!

Many of the drinks at Comme Ca are based on vintage recipes using spirits from smaller distilleries, fresh squeezed juices, house made syrups and custom cuts of ice.  Chemistry style beakers house the fresh ingredients that are displayed on the stainless bar top.  The cocktail menu was set up by Sam Ross of NYC's Milk and Honey and Little Branch bars.  Bartenders here went through six weeks of training with Sam learning the system of how drinks are put together, their special ingredients, and the proper chilling of the drink to sustain it's flavor.  Depending on the drink it's either hand cracked ice, crushed ice or served up in a chilled glass.

Here are a few of the Comme Ca cocktails prepared for us by talented mixologist Clinton Neal Johnson:

East Side Maid

Gin, Cucumber, mint, simple syrup, lime, shaken and served up in a chilled glass.

The Rumble (house cocktail)

White rum,  simple syrup, lemon, blackberries muddled with simple syrup.  Rum mixture is poured in glass, then glass is filled with crushed ice, crushed ice is then topped with muddled blackberries.

Aperol Spritz

Champagne, Italian amperitivo Aperol, orange slice.

Dark & Stormy

Goslings Black Rum, lime juice, house made ginger syrup, served over hand cracked ice in a tall glass.

Cap-Germain-HA

Cachaca Brazilian Rum, muddled limes and raspberries with sugar cube, St Germain, served over hand cracked ice.

Comme Ca is celebrating the late afternoon cocktail with a d'e faire (French for "to untie or unlace") menu from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  It features special $7 cocktails and hors d' oeuvres and $2 oysters.
